EVE February newsletter 2018
Principal’s Message
The first month of 2018 has been an exciting one at Eagle View Elementary! On January 19, future preschool children and their adults joined the fun and games of “Ready, Set, Learn.” Mrs. Rimek, Ms. Rossato, Ms. Wiersma and Ms. Ducharme, along with a cohort of Grade 5 leadership students, helped plan, organize and run the activity stations. Kim Tooley and Rosalina Munro provided the PAC perspective on our wonderful school. With Colquitz Middle School hosting their information night on Wednesday, February 7, grade 5 students and their families are starting to think about their transitions, too. (EVE PAC meeting cancelled that night.)
As you know, “extending the number sense and calculation skills of our students IN A MEANINGFUL CONTEXT” is one of our two Eagle View goals for this school year. All staff experienced an outstanding day of learning on Monday, January 29 when we worked with Nikki Lineham. Ms. Lineham reinforced the importance of a “Growth Mindset” in math and then led us through a series of activities that we can share with students. Using manipulatives, games and story problems was a particular focus. MATH MANIA , an evening event for Eagle View families, followed on Tuesday night. A big thank you to Ms. Brain, Mrs. Pollard and many students of Division 2 who helped host, as well as the Grade 5 families who baked up treats galore!
Our second goal, which involves enhancing Social Emotional Skills, finds a perfect opportunity for celebration in February, our special month for highlighting kindness. Staff are discussing the virtues of kind acts and to celebrate, we will be featuring February 14 as Pink/Red/White day and Wednesday, February 28 (10:30) as a Kindness Assembly Day.
On the Athletic front, basketball continues for grade 4/5 students and their teacher coaches, Ms. Houldsworth and Mr. Nast. The highlight will be the Jamboree on Wednesday, February 28 (12:30 – 2:30) at Spectrum Secondary School. All are invited to cheer on Team Eagle View. Swimmers and their coach, Mrs. Wiersma, participated in the “Stand UP and Race Swim Meet” on January 14 which will be followed on Monday, February 19 with the Preliminary Swim Meet. House games continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Ms. Bender/Mrs. Wiersma leading the games.
